Who We Are
“Qawem” is the Arabic word for “resist.” It is from the root “q-w-m” meaning “to stand up” or “to rise up.”
Qawem is a newly formed coalition of organizers who have come together from many different struggles in response to the recent zionist military assault on Palestine in 2008-2009. We come from movements that support Palestinian liberation, New African liberation, Puerto Rican independence,and the liberation struggles of indigenous peoples around the world. Our members are also involved in movements for penal abolition, political prisoner support and liberation, anti-repression, GLBTQ liberation, climate justice, anti-authoritarianism, animal liberation, and the labor, independent political, and anti-war movements. We are based in the Northeastern “U.S.”
